“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” Matthew 6: 28-30.
Is this touching, or what?! If you take the time to examine a flower closely, you can see clearly that the Lord really spared no expense in creating it. If the petals were a ballgown, it would be made of the richest, most luxurious material. It would be intricately designed with the finest details that only the most experienced dressmaker could pull off. Everyone at the ball would know who made that dress without even having to ask. This is how He clothes the flowers! Shouldn’t this tell us that we have no need to worry whether we’re cared for, or whether our needs will be met?
If you read just a few verses earlier, you find that this is really a message about not serving two masters. Not idolizing our needs to the point of worrying about them. Have you ever considered worry a byproduct of idolatry?
Sometimes, a hard truth can be accepted more easily if it’s packaged in something gentle and beautiful. I believe that’s one reason that God chose to use flowers as the example in this hard-hitting passage. He knows His creation has a soft spot for beautiful things (He made us that way!).
