The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside still paying attention? Or did your mind go somewhere else because you’ve heard this one a thousand times before? It’s understandable; it’s easy to become desensitized to a message we’ve heard so many times. But when I really stop and think about the words of Psalm 23, I see a message of guidance and peace. Of needs being met. Of fullness. Which is a message I desperately need daily.
How easy it is in the world we live in— which sells us a lifestyle of lack with a veneer of abundance, of constant complaining and discontentment followed by endless chasing after emptiness— to be convinced that we don’t yet have what we need. That our fulfillment lies just past the next purchase, or nestled within the next vacation destination. Or the next relationship. Or in anything other than God. News flash: it doesn’t. The hollowness inside of us is God-shaped, and can only be filled by the One who created that emptiness within us. He waits to be invited in. And He waits for us to ask for and accept the abundance which is already ours in Him.
